Humming to himself, the Patriarch Thuridan Grovemender knocked on the door of his Magister’s office and paused.

“Come!” came a cry from within.

“Finally!” the mage said as he swung the door open, and as he stepped in, he paused as his gaze fell upon a flustered Daniton Drakesong making his way towards his desk.

“Where have you been?” Thuridan asked, closing the door behind him

“Meaning?” Daniton frowned as he sat.

“Well, I’ve been over twice, and both times you weren’t here.”

“Ah,” Daniton smiled, “forgive me.”

“Is all well?”

“Yeah.” The Magister nodded smiling. “It’s just…I had to rush home to pick up these.”

The Magister held up a roll of parchment.

“Oh?”

“Yeah.” Daniton nodded once more. “I could’ve sworn I still had some around here somewhere, but for some ghastly reason, I can’t find them.”

“Oh,” Thuridan replied, then shrugged. “They’ll turn up eventually.”

“Yeah, eventually,” Daniton replied, then frowned. “Why were you looking for me, anyway?”

“Oh, not I, Davian. He wished to speak to you about a matter of the gravest importance.”

“Ah…” the Magister replied, his smile returning as he sat back into his chair. “Well, he found me.”

“Oh?”

Daniton nodded.

“What was it about? From the way he was behaving, I feared the worst.”

At this, the Magister’s smile grew. “Oh, far from it.”

“Oh? Do tell!”

“It seems your son now holds sway over my sister. More so than I, in fact.”

Thuridan held his friend in a confused stare. “What do you mean?”

“He brought Anise over to my home to make amends.”

“What?” Thuridan gasped.

“Mhm.” Daniton nodded. “Your son did the one thing I’ve utterly failed to do all this time. Anise and I have made peace at last, and it’s all down to that bright young boy of yours.”

“Ha!” Thuridan grinned. “That boy never ceases to amaze me!”

“Heh, me neither.”

“And it’s such good fortune he found you at home as well!”

“Yes, it is!” Daniton cried. “It’s almost as if…”

But then, the Magister’s smile slowly faded as he held his friend in a most peculiar gaze before staring into the ether.

“Daniton?” Thuridan asked after a spell.

“Hrm?” Daniton frowned, turning to his friend.

“What is it?”

“No, it’s…uhm…” the Magister said, staring into the ether once more

“Did Davian come into my office?” Daniton soon asked, turning to his friend once more.

Thuridan nodded. “He was just stepping out when I ran into him.”

“Did he have anything in his hand?”

“Why?”

“Did he have anything, Thuridan?”

The Patriarch stared at his friend in silence a spell, but soon turned his gaze to the ether, his thoughts turning to events past.

“No,” he said at last, shaking his head, “he had nothing.”

“What did he say he was doing in my office?”

“Leaving you a note.”

The Magister turned to his desk, his brow furrowed deep.

“Daniton, what is it?”

Shaking his head, the Magister rose.

“I must return home,” he said, hurrying to the door. “I must check on something.”

“On what?” Thuridan asked as his friend neared him.

“I shall return as fast as I can.”

“Daniton,” Thuridan said, his voice soft as he placed a hand upon his friend’s just as Daniton grasped the door’s handle. “What is it?”

Daniton stared at his friend as if weighing his words, but soon, he spoke.
